Capital Partners for Education is seeking mentors for high school students. CPE is a joint scholarship/mentoring program that provides educational opportunities for low-income high school students in the Washington Metropolitan area. You may learn more about the CPE mentor program by downloading the attached document. CPE will be matching mentors with our new students beginning high school this fall, and are looking for individuals who are interested and committed to helping students achieve academically and professionally.

The District Department of Environment (DDOE) has made a commitment to do our part to save energy and help protect our environment. With your help, we can do even more. Be part of our team and pledge to make your next light one that's earned the government's ENERGY STAR® for excellence in energy efficiency. The Pledge is a simple, but vital method of getting more people like you to commit to reducing greenhouse gases and saving energy resources, one light at a time.

Our goal is to get at least 1000 people to Pledge to change at least one light at home. Just think, by reaching this goal we will be making a significant impact on our environment, reducing approximately 446,000 of greenhouse gas emissions and 282,000 kWh of energy.

Emergence Community Arts Collective

ECAC relies heavily on volunteer services to help in all aspects of our operation. No skill is necessary to be a volunteer, just a willingness to be a part of our growing community. Volunteer hours are rewarded with "service coupons" which can be exchanged for many of our program fees.

Higher Achievement
Volunteer Mentors Needed

DC's award-winning academic enrichment program, Higher Achievement, is in need of volunteer teaching mentors to work with our middle school students. This is a chance to give well-deserved academic opportunities to students who are motivated to learn and overcome adversity. Be a part of our after school program!

As a mentor, you would work with a small group of intellectually curious 5th- 8th graders once a week. We provide you with a challenging curricula (including daily lessons plans, ready for your use!), training, and ongoing support. You provide the commitment and the love.

You would commit to mentoring one evening per week (or more, if you'd like!), on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday, from 6pm to 8pm. You can choose to work with our scholars on Literature, Math, or Technology, depending on your interests, talents, and availability. Our after school center is located at the Lincoln Middle School in Columbia Heights, at 3101 16th Street, NW – easily accessible by either metro or bus – and the first day of our fall after school academy is October 2nd.

Positive Force
Activists & Volunteers Needed

Positive Force is an activist group that works for fundamental social change and youth empowerment. We organize benefit and free concerts, demonstrations and teach-ins and also do direct work with needy people. Positive Force is not about a list of "do's" and "don'ts"—we are about a spirit of flexible, creative rebellion that has room for many specific beliefs. Apathy, ignorance, conformity and greed are our common enemies. We believe in the power of young people to change the world and in the right of all to live as they wish, provided that they are not preventing others from being able to do so.

The Washington Literacy Council
Adult Tutors Needed
 

The Washington Literacy Council is looking for volunteer literacy tutors. Tutors are needed to provide one-on-one help in reading to adults in DC. New tutors are trained in monthly sessions throughout the year. Tutors commit to a year of service and meet for 1 hour each week with their students at the library or the Washington Literacy Council Office. No prior teaching/tutoring experience required.
